Founded in 1999 in Germany, the a cappella quintet embodies the rich choral tradition of Leipzig, the city so closely associated with Bach and Mendelssohn. The critic of Classical Voice of North Carolina described a Calmus performance as “stunning. I sat through the performance with my mouth agape and a smile on my lips.” What captivates critics and audiences is not only the group’s riveting stage presence and sublime technique but also a diverse repertoire conveyed with great respect, joy and fun. Calmus programs seamlessly link works by the renaissance and baroque masters with great German romantic works as well as contemporary repertoire and popular songs. An active concert schedule has already taken the ensemble across Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and North and South America. Festival appearances include International A Cappella Week in Hannover and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival where the group attended a master class with the King’s Singers. Other prestigious awards bestowed upon Calmus include First Prizes at the fourth annual Robert Schumann Choral Competition, the International Competition for Vocal Ensembles in Finland and the 37th Tolosa Choral Contest in Spain.
