Forging a one-of-a-kind career path, Kono Michi earns accolades as the singing and songwriting alter-ego of accomplished concert violinist Michi Wiancko. Kono Michi (Japanese for ‘This Path’) fuses her classical background with a unique pop sensibility to create original music for voice, string quintet and drums. The Strad describes Kono Michi’s music as “…gently honeyed…around the succinct text, she crafts precise, imaginative textures.” The UK’s Planet Sound echoes this sentiment, referencing “a Bjork-like brooding wonderland.” Kono Michi and her band have performed at Merkin Concert Hall and Symphony Space’s Thalia Theatre in Manhattan, BAM Café and Barbes in Brooklyn and World Café Live in Philadelphia, and she recently released 9 Death Haiku on the Scottish Independent label Shark Batter Records. The Strad hailed the disc as “intriguing and exquisitely beautiful… music that breaks through the pop classical barrier.” Kono Michi’s music has been broadcast on BBC’s Radio 1 and 6 Music shows. Michi Wiancko is a winner of the CAG Competition and a New Music/New Places Fellow.
